Itinerary

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Begin the trek at Momella Gate after completing park formalities and meeting your mountain crew. The trail enters the forested slopes of Mount Meru, where you may encounter wildlife including giraffe, buffalo and various antelope along the lower sections. Continue steadily through dense montane forest before reaching Miriakamba Hut, your first overnight stop.

  • Trekking: Approximately 4 to 5 hours
  • Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut

Leave the forest behind as the trail climbs through increasingly open terrain towards Saddle Hut. The ascent becomes steeper, with changing vegetation and increasingly dramatic views across the surrounding landscape. From Saddle Hut, there is an opportunity to take a short acclimatisation hike towards Little Meru before returning for the evening.

  • Trekking: Approximately 3 to 4 hours
  • Overnight: Saddle Hut

Day 3: Suddle Hut To Socialist Peak To Miriakamba Hut

Begin the summit push in the early hours, following the trail through the alpine zone towards Rhino Point and Cobra Point. Continue along the crater rim as the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic before reaching Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres. Spend time at the summit taking in panoramic views across Mount Meru's volcanic crater, the surrounding Arusha landscape and, when conditions are clear, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Descend along the same route, returning to Saddle Hut before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for the night.

  • Trekking: Approximately 10 to 12 hours
  • Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut → Momela Gate

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the forest towards Momella Gate. The lower slopes offer another opportunity to experience the changing vegetation and wildlife of Arusha National Park. Upon reaching the gate, meet your vehicle for the transfer onward to Arusha or your next destination.

  • Trekking: Approximately 3 to 4 hours
  • Overnight: Momella Gate
